Before we can understand garments we first must understand why we need to be clothed with a garment in the first place. We need to also understand what clothing represents in scripture in all its different forms. Could it be that it was not God’s original intent that we would need to be clothed?

First, we see in Genesis 2:25, “and they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” This is because our first garment was a garment of light. This is just as God is covered in a garment of light as we read in Psalm 104:2, “Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain.” We also read in  Isaiah 61:10, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments  of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”

As we unpack God’s word we see the word for skin in Hebrew is “owr.” This same word also means “light” with a subtle difference. This can only be revealed when we read the original text. The owr of light is spelled עוּר (ayin vav resh). When we change the first letter it reads אוֹר (aleph vav resh), meaning light as well, although this light is a spiritual light. When fallen the result is the word owr spelled with an ע (ayin) rather than an א (aleph). This might seem unimportant, but this is significant when you understand how Adam’s skin אוֹר (owr) of light when fallen becomes עוּר in its fallen state. When death entered mankind as a result of sin, in turn, concealing the spiritual.

It says in Genesis 3:7, “and the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” They were aware of their fallen state because the א (aleph) had been replaced with ע (ayin), turning garments of light to skin. And what was their instinctive reaction? They started sewing clothing! It is no coincidence that they would use fig leaves, which are symbolic in scriptures of excuses, hypocrisy, and false religion. Now we can see why when we look at the word “garment” under the Biblical Usage in Hebrew (Strong’s H899 – beged) it says “treachery, deceit.” Further, when you look at the root it Hebrew (Strong’s H898 – bagad) it says “to act treacherously, deceitfully, deal treacherously.”

If we take a closer look at our lives, we are experts at this great cover-up. We are still sewing fig leaves resulting in fantastic excuses, hypocrisy and false religion through our “thought, speech, and action.”  This is how we spiritually clothe ourselves, as a result of our fallen nature.

Even in our fallen nature, God demonstrates his incredible mercy and justice. In his mercy, He reveals the plan of salvation by the sacrificing of the innocent. We read in Genesis 3:21, “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Here we see the word for skin (Strong’s H5785) is “owr.” This is a theme we will see throughout scripture, which is the sacrifice of the innocent for the guilty. This is precisely what Jesus did for each of us so that we can be clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

Here are some New Testament verses that will help bring understanding to this truth:

Romans 13:14: “but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.”

Colossians 3:12: Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;”

Galatians 3:27: “for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

2 Corinthians 5:21: “for he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
