A STUDY ON BIBLICLE PRIESTHOODS
Fr Leo Benjamin
Interestingly, the High Priest wore a Turban to remind him that his mind needed to be set on YHVH as he served in the Holy Place Exodus 28:4. It is interesting that on the forehead of this turban there is a golden plate with an inscription that says “Holy to the Lord” Exodus 28:36.
Remember that the temple in which the Levitical high priest served is a foreshadow of the priesthood of Melchizedek. As we read in Ephesians 6:13 we need to put on the whole armor of God, and that armor is the eight garments of the High Priest. This includes the turban, as we read in Ephesians 6:17-18, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” What about the helmet? The helmet is the turban, which works with the sword of the Spirit. This relates to Paul who writes about the word of God working with prayer and supplication in the spirit, not for ourselves but for all the saints.
Remember from our previous teachings that the High Priest is to carry the breastplate of Judgement on his heart before the Lord. This includes all the names of Israel. It is important to understand, as a priestly people a holy people, the responsibility we have before God. We are to do the same as Jesus our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. As a Priest in this order, we have an incredible responsibility to carry others before the Lord Jesus our High Priest who gave his life for each of us.
John 15:13 reads, “greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Prayers and supplication for others is our high calling because it causes us the get rid of our selfish desires. So we have to ask ourselves, what is on our mind and heart? In the Hebraic mindset, they did not think the same way as you and I. Going into the tabernacle was an act of obedience, not logical thought like you and I would think of it. It is a work of the spirit in conjunction with the Word of God, and being in prayer for others with all supplications from the heart.
What is your heart set on? Matthew 6:21 reminds us, “for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” It may seem odd to ask, where is your treasure? Consider what we read in Ezekiel 44:28 regarding the Priesthood, “and it shall be unto them for an inheritance: I am their inheritance: and ye shall give them no possession in Israel: I am their possession.” Also in Deuteronomy 18:1-2 it reads, “The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. The Lord is their inheritance, as he said unto them.” What’s on our forehead is the inscription “Holy to the Lord. Having the mind of the Messiah, we read in 1 Corinthians 2:16, “for who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” What inscription is on your forehead?
