A biblical understanding of Prayer and Meditation brings a whole new perspective to this incredible Christian journey we have the privilege of being on. This privilege is leading each of us on a closer walk with Jesus Christ our Melchizedek High Priest.

As Hebrews 3:1 states, “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.” In this article, we will discover the inspiring and rich meaning that scripture reveals as we diligently uncover the powerful and creative force that the word of God describes. We’ll see how Jesus teaches us through his Word to come into his presence and gives us a greater understanding of how powerful prayer is, and how to use focused prayerful speech, thoughts, and actions in our heart.

Siyach Strong’s H7878 is one word that teaches us how to enter into God’s presence by actively using all of our human faculties, engaging our emotions and intellect through meditation and prayer. This is how we enter into His heavenly tabernacle which was shown to Moses on Mount Sinai. As Exodus 25:8-9 reads, “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.” This scripture tells us how to take on the personal responsibility and build an inner refuge in our temporary portable temple. We do this by using the willful intentions and desires of our heart, making a vessel for his presence to dwell among us, as well as on the throne of our heart.

Through the scriptures, we experience with all its incredible detail a place to have a beautiful intimate relationship Jesus our bridegroom. This happens by separating ourselves from the things of this world and learning to break away from the outside influence of fear and doubt. Instead, we are to have awe, confidence, and faith, guiding us to the Holy place within, giving wings to our voice through Jesus in the heavenly temple within us. We will learn to clothe ourselves in His priestly garments, by using the tools of thought, speech, and action as we savor each word of meditation and prayer, by vocalizing God’s Word.  We do this through the study of God’s Word, praying the words of the Divine Office and in our Daily Mass.

As we review the definitions of these Hebrew words, we will begin to see the root verbs which are actions behind the noun. Opening up God’s intention behind the building blocks of creation, we see His beauty and glory throughout as the clothing of nature itself that conceals God’s very presence. This happens as we pray and meditate on His Word by finding that inner place where Jesus lives on the throne of our heart. As Luke 17:20-21 reads, “Jesus said the Kingdom of heaven is within.”

This is not just an intellectual pursuit, it is a journey that starts with the whispers of verbally reviewing the seeds of God’s word. We see the images that are revealed as we uncover the Hebrew words at their root where all life springs from.

Let’s have a mini lesson on Hebrew root words, which always focuses us on word pictures and images. Almost all Hebrew roots are verbs representing the action hidden behind physical creation. These Images will form in our heart by the vocalizing the action of Prayer & Meditation on His Word. We see this in all of nature, as all life stems from the action springing from the root. The same is true in scripture because much of the Bible was originally written in Hebrew or Greek. When we look to the action of the root, we see the intent of the author referring back to God’s will and desire, even as He spoke, and still is speaking continually all that we know into existence.

Because we are made in His image and likeness we can participate in the very act of creation in the temple of His glory and beauty. We do so by learning to closely follow the actions of these incredible Biblical Hebrew root words.

As we enter this short study the first thing to remember is almost all Hebrew roots are verbs that identify the action of the word! Additionally, Hebrew nouns identify who is performing the action! We see this in nature, all life stems from the action of the root, and the same is true in scripture.


Incredibly the very first use of the Hebrew word Siyach is in Genesis 2:5 where we are given insight into our participation and responsibility to cultivate the seed of His Word in the Garden of Eden of our heart. As we read this scripture we notice that God makes it very clear, that He will not produce His life in our heart without our participation.

In Genesis 2:5 we read, “and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.” The word plant in Hebrew is Siyach (meaning bush, plant, and shrub) was growing out of the earth. It’s no great revelation that the word plant is a noun, but when you look up the Hebrew root for Plant you see something amazing. Looking at its meaning as a verb Strong’s H7878 you see the action to put forth, mediate, muse, commune, speak, complain, ponder, sing, to meditate, consider, put forth thoughts. We can see a much deeper meaning when you consider the root of the word, and in this case, our verbal participation brings a deeper understanding of the story of creation. In other words, when you verbally till the ground of your heart, forming the conditions needed for growth, just as we illustrated in the introduction making a place in your inner temple, then the seed of his Word is preparing to bring forth its potential and grow.

The tilling of the ground of our heart influences the heavens whereby bringing the rain, allowing for growth, and the revelation of His Word. Jesus taught us when He walked the earth that the seed is His Word (see Luke 8:11b). He forms a word picture, an image, which develops the ability for us to get closer to our bridegroom and Melchizedek high priest.

We also read in Ephesians 1:17-18, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.”

Do you see your responsibility to care for what God has planted in our heart? He has given us the tools and the ability to verbally confess of our faith, the images formed by His Word in our heart which cause the growth and bring with it His refreshing presence.

Here are a few more uses for the verb Siyach:

Psalm 55:17: “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray Siyach, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”

Psalm 105:2: “Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk Siyach ye of all his wondrous works.”

Psalm 119:148: “Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate Siyach in thy word.”

Remember Speech is merely the expression of thought, action is the expression of your speech and your thoughts! 

By the use of our Thoughts, Speech and Action its clear, when it comes to Siyach prayer and meditation, as we focus our thoughts on the images, that His word forms and cultivates in our heart. He sends the blessing of rain from above whereby feeding and bringing growth to our souls.
