A STUDY ON PRAYER

In our continued study on garments, the word Hagah is another interesting root word from the Hebrew Scriptures. It describes the action of purifying gold and silver. This process is achieved by repeatedly melting and cooling in the refiner’s fire to remove all the impurities, which makes silver or gold pure. During this possess the impurities are like removing the fears and unbelief that have been mingled into our faith. With this repeated action, it refines our “Faith.” That is confidence, as Hebrews 11:6 reads, “But without faith/confidence it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
As we further study the Hebrew word Hagah what emerges is really interesting, for instance in (Strong’s H1898 – meaning to remove, drive out) it’s describing the action of repeating of God’s Word over and over, to Jesus our Melchizedek high priest. In turn removing the dross from our self-centered desires and attachments in this world. A cognate of the same word Hegeh Strong’s H1899 meaning a rumbling, growling, moaning. A great word picture that would best illustrate this action is a lion eating and groaning over its food. Depicting the demeanor of our soul as we enter in the Holy place, with the priestly garments that we are learning to wear as we put on Christ, remembering that our priestly garments are made up of our thought, speech, and action for the glory and beauty of God.
Proverbs 25:4 reads, “Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.”
We read about how the Apostle Paul grew strong in his faith, even though he went through so many trials. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Our undisciplined heart and mind with all of our crazy thoughts are brought under subjection by a cognate of the word Hagah. That word is Hegeh, which is the Hebrew word meaning rudder or helm. Confessing the Word of God out loud or even just under our breath directs and navigates our heart and our thoughts through the restlessness of our mind, will and emotions.
The battleground is in your mind and heart where every high imagination exalts itself against the knowledge of God.
2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
These thoughts keep us from the presence of God. James teaches us that life and death is in the power of the tongue. Controlling our tongue is one of our most powerful weapons we have.
James 3:2-5, “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so, the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”
Again we need to be aware that the territory being fought over is our heart and mind, remembering that we have the ability to be Vessels for good or evil.
The enemy will fight you tooth and nail, to keep you from entering the presence of your High priest, your bridegroom. Hagah Prayer & Meditation is how God designed each of us to connect with Him, this type of meditation removes the enemy’s strongholds that bind our prayers to this earthy realm.
We also see that this type of Hagah of repeating and verbalizing the scripture quiets our heart from our outward focus of wants and desires that are empty of the kingdom of God.
In turn, removing the dross, the impure thoughts that have been programmed into our life, replacing it with the creative, healing, life-giving Word of God!
Here are a few more uses for Hagah
Psalm 1:2, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate (Hagah) day and night.”
Psalm 5:1, “Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation (hagiyg).” a cognate of Hagah
Joshua 1:8 this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate (Hagah) therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Before we finish this brief study on Prayer & Meditation let’s look at how these two biblical words Siyach from our last study and Hagah work together.
Psalm 77:12, “I will meditate (Hagah) also of all thy work, and talk (Siyach) of thy doings.”
Psalm 143:5, “I remember the days of old; I meditate (Hagah) on all thy works; I muse (Siyach) on the work of thy hands.”
In both verses, Hagah is before Siyach. This is because your mind needs to be renewed first.
Romans 12:2, “and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
You will find that the images in your heart and mind are soiled as we walk through the dirt roads of life. When you Meditate and Pray on the word of God, Hagah removes the impure dross and Siyach plants and cultivates. Always remember that it is God that giveth the increase (Corinthians 3:7b).
