UNDERSTANDING PRAYER THROUGH GODS WORD

Fr Leo Benjamin

There is a word in scripture that is used for “meditation” it is the Hebrew word Siyach and its root words. When we study this word in the Bible, it brings to light a better understanding of how prayer works, Also how Jesus taught about prayer. The Idea that is conveyed in this Word originates in the simple understand of how the restriction of our breath through our tongue, teeth, and lips as it passes through our mouth to create the expression of speech. Whereby becoming an asset in assisting in prayer. This action of speech activates the heart, allowing prayer to not just be an act of the intellect. Even more importantly prayer becomes an action of the heart that is heard in the heavens! Expressing your words from the backdrop of a (disciplined life).

We read in James 3:5-6, Even so, the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell, thereby reminding us of the power and the responsibility we have in our mouth. We also know that when God spoke he set in motion life itself God said “LET THERE BE” and it was so, He made us in His image even Adam we read in Genesis 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

We don’t realize how tremendous a tool God has given each us.

The first time we see the word Siyach is in Genesis 2:5 And every PLANT Strong’s H7880 of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. The word for plant is fascinating because when you look up its root, you will see in Strong’s H7878 it says; to put forth, mediate, muse, commune, speak, complain, ponder, sing… all involving the use of the expression of speech in the positive and or the negative.

Speech is an expression of thought.

You must ask yourself, what’s in your heart?

In Matthew 6:21 we read; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Jesus said this when He was teaching about prayer and meditation, He could not have given us a more excellent insight into the understanding, what has value and the responsibility we have in participating in the process.

Let’s look again at Genesis just before the Lord God put man in the Garden Genesis 2:5 and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. When it says “there was not a man to till the ground” Could it be that he was also talking about the garden of our heart, and the responsibility each of us has to till and cultivate the garden of our heart.

So when you’re in prayer, reading and meditating on Gods Word all the while your tilling and cultivating your heart, the plants that are already there, are just waiting for you to start the process, it is God that will bring the Growth 1 Corinthians 3:7 b “but God that giveth the increase”.
