With the hope of spring in our hearts, and the promise of warmer weather. We know by experience that nature will blossom once again. We as Christians have this strange practice of putting ashes on our forehead. This exercise reminds that we are dust and to dust; we shall return, a tradition that dates back to the old testament with Abraham when he realizes that he is mere dust himself, Job in repentance, the list of examples could go on and on. The Hebrew word for ashes is ‘epher אֵפֶר H665 ashes are used to remind us that our flesh is limited and our nature prone to sin. Just as the first Adam who was a living soul (mind will and emotion) our fallen nature with no hope! We can now celebrate eternal life because of the New Adam Jesus Christ who is a life-giving spirit offering us eternal life. Let us use this time wisely as we remember why Jesus had to die for us when he went to the cross in each of us, why he was buried and rose again in us. This is the very heart of the Good News he loves each of us that much.
So when someone asks you’re why is their dirt on your forehead, you can tell them you were nothing more than dust, but because Jesus’s incredible love for you, he freely went to His death and rose again that you might have true life.
